Willie Mitchell Banks is back! Michael Henry's beloved character has returned in a tightly woven new mystery set in Oxford, Mississippi. Willie Mitchell has moved to Oxford from Sunshine and is trying to quietly live out his retirement sipping vodka tonics and going to the golf-course with an assortment of amusing characters, but try as he might, trouble still finds him. This time Willie Mitchell is asked to look into a cold case murder that occurred during the 1962 riots at Ole Miss. The riots took place in September 1962 as U.S. military veteran James Meredith was integrated into the university supported by a large federal presence. Drawing on this fascinating historical event, Mr. Henry places Willie Mitchell in the middle of uncovering what really happened the night two civilians were killed.Mr. Henry delivers all the familiar characters we love in a Willie Mitchell tale; Jimmy Gray is back (thank goodness!) along with Cheryl Diamond, Eleanor Bernstein, Sheriff Lee Jones, and Walton Donaldson. Willie Mitchell gives a brief assist to Walton in the courtroom and we even get a reappearance of Helmet Head, the defense attorney. These familiar characters along with some fascinating new ones attest to the depth of Mr. Henry's skill in character development and give a platform to show off his ability to write hilarious and realistic dialogue. The plot is fast-moving, full of surprises, and filled with the wry wise-cracking jokes between Willie Mitchell and his friend Jimmy Gray that we have come to expect in a WIllie Mitchell Banks novel.
This novel can, of course, stand alone, but thankfully there are seven other novels before this one. I have often thought that his first, Three Bad Years, was my favorite one, but I think Murder in the Grove may have changed my mind. I'm now anxiously awaiting the next book in this series!

Murder In The Grove A Willie Mitchell Banks Novel edition by Michael Henry Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Well paced novel about a 40 year old murder mystery that turns over much more than expected in the end. The first half builds up the setting and characters while setting the hook for a page-turning ending. Definitely worth reading and maybe the best Willie Mitchell book in the series.
I have found a new author. A really fun read if you are from Mississippi and went to Ole Miss.
A book you won't put down! I was a young child in the 60s, and Michael's research into this event gave me a broader view of what actually happened on the Ole Miss campus that horrendous night. Several plots intermingle to create a suspenseful page turner! He also did a great job with his character development. I've read all of Michael Henry's books and I believe this is the best! Can't wait for the next one!!

Loved, loved, loved it. Story followed very close to actual happening during this horrible in Mississippi. Loved the charicters and plot development. Enjoyed. An easy read.
This is the first book I have read by Mr. Henry it will not be the last. As a child of the era he writes about I was interested in how he wrote his story. He did an excellent job. He kept me engaged, interested and on the edge of my seat. I cannot wait to read more of his works
The story of Willie Mitchell Banks, DA in the Mississippi Delta, continues with a number of the same characters as in previous novels. Henry, a great story teller, weaves a story that is both complex and captivating and makes you feel and experience the characters. He takes you back to a dark period in the history of Mississippi when a riot occurred upon the admission of James Meredith to Ole Miss in 1962. He also gives you a feel for the small town of Oxford, Mississippi, as it is today, which is very much like any other small university town and decades past the Mississippi that most people across the country believe still exists.
The story takes many turns and twists and without a doubt will hold your attention until the end. Henry improves with every novel and I look forward to reading his next episode with Willie Mitchell.
I was at Ole Miss in 1962, and I now live in Oxford, MS. Further, I have met Michael Henry and talked with him a little about his work. In "Murder in the Grove", Michael has been able to blend a very "cold case" (from 1962) with direct connections to current goings-on in Oxford and that part of Mississippi we call the Delta. There is suspense and a bit of humor. His characters are, I think, genuinely Southern (please don't read "redneck" here). This book is very readable, and it had me from page 1. Give it a try. You'll like it.
